Wednesdays In The Word: John 1:16-18 (grace upon grace)

Wednesdays In The Word

“For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.” (John 1:16-18)

GRACE UPON GRACE

Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.  From His fullness, we have all received grace, and grace, and grace upon grace.  We have not seen God, but Jesus came to show us who He is.  When we behold Jesus, in all His grace and truth, we know God.  Grace and truth: these make up His character, His person, His intention toward us, His heart, His mind, His being.

GOD SEES US

There is a fullness in Him that is for us.  For us, as in “on our side” as well as in “that we can access.”  God is full, brim-full (it’s who He is) of grace and truth.  This is love.  Love sees, you remember.  God sees you.  God sees me.

Through the Psalms God tells us that His very thoughts toward us are precious.  He knows our going out, our coming in, our deepest desires, our very thoughts–even the words on our lips before we say them, He knows them.  How we feel, how we struggle, when we rejoice–He knows it all.  The outburst from our child that ripped us to the core, the tenseness between spouses, the awkwardness of a social gathering, the dreams and joys which we treasure in our hearts–He knows every bit of us.  He knows who we are, and counts us as precious unto Himself.

GOD IS FOR US

God knows intimately our struggles, our sufferings, the injustices that come against us, as well as the sins we commit.  To all of it, and through all of it, He offers grace upon grace upon grace.

The Psalmist once wrote:

You have kept count of my tossings;
put my tears in your bottle.
Are they not in your book?

This I know, that God is for me.

TOWARD US, GOD’S GRACE ABOUNDS

“And God is able to make all grace abound to you,” Paul encouraged the Corinthians, “so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”

For everything we have to do in life, for everything we endure, for everything we attempt, for everything at which we succeed and for everything at which we fail; in everything, and to every bit of who we are, God is able to make grace abound.  From His fullness He offers grace upon grace upon grace upon grace so that we are enough and we can do enough, in Him.    His cup overflows.  He abounds.  And in Him (only in Him!) we abound as well.

Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. He is the Word, He is the True Light, He is the  Life of all mankind.  And He is ours!
