100 Year Old Chalkboard Lessons and Modern Waldorf Math Circles

I was totally entranced by this discovery of 98 year old chalkboards buried beneath newer chalkboards in an Oklahoma school.  That the carpenters in 1917 hung new boards over the old ones without erasing the lessons is somewhat enchanting to me.  Click over to the Washington Post article to see more images.

In particular, this multiplication wheel interested me.  I keep looking for a pattern–is there one, or are these just random numbers for the children to turn into oral sums?

Google searches brought me to this youtube video of Waldorf math circles, which I found captivating.  It took my multiplication-learning son a little while to even begin to think outside of his box and understand what the instructor is doing.  Who am I kidding?  It took ME a little while to catch on!  Isn’t this neat?

Whenever I see Waldorf chalkboards I wish I could throw out all of my educational leanings and just send my kids to a Waldorf School.   (Except…I’m not even sure we have any in Oklahoma.  Do we?)
