May these words of my mouth, and this meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and Redeemer. – Psalm 19:14
I often write about Scripture, because it is largely the lens through which I understand our world and it burns in me to tell what I see. Sometimes I write in an expository style (learning and teaching my way slowly through single passages of scripture, musing over a few verses at a time) and sometimes I write in a devotional style (weaving scriptures and spiritual insights into ordinary stories and heart mediations). Sometimes I go through long stretches of time where I do not write at all.
When I was younger I thought I knew more than I now know I know. I don’t feel that way any more. Paul the Apostle says when he was younger he spoke like a child but now that he’s grown he has put childish things behind him. I like to hope that knowing all the answers is one of the childish things I’ve grown beyond. But I imagine in another decade or so I will look back again at this current stage of life and will marvel at how much I thought I knew.
James, in the New Testament, says very few of us ought to become teachers, and I really take his words to heart. So here are “the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart, may they be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer”.
“Will you also leave?” Jesus asked, turning to the twelve.
“Lord, to whom would we go?” Peter replied. “You have the words of eternal life.”
